Why I feed my dogs RAW (and maybe you should too)?

I'm often asked why I feed my dog raw food, and it's a valid question.

Have you seen all those commercials for dog food that show healthy, happy pups frolicking around in green meadows? Advertisers make it appear that feeding your dog dry kibble is the key to a long and prosperous life for your dog. But in reality, those commercials couldn't be further from the truth.

Just like humans, dogs are meant to eat a diet that is primarily made up of whole, unprocessed foods. I know it's confusing because there are a lot of myths and misconceptions out there about raw diets for dogs, so I thought I'd take a moment to set the record straight. Here's why I believe that feeding my dogs raw food is the best decision I could make for their health.

Raw Diets are More Nutritious

The first thing people need to understand about raw diets is that they are more nutritionally dense than kibble or canned food. That's because when you cook food, you lose a lot of the nutrients that are essential to your dog's health. For example, cooking meat destroys enzymes that are important for digesting protein, and it also denatures proteins, making them less bioavailable. Cooking also destroys vitamins and other nutrients. So, when you feed your dog cooked food, they're not getting all the nutrients they need from their diet.

Raw Diets are More Digestible

Another myth about raw diets is that they are more difficult for dogs to digest than cooked food. In reality, the opposite is true. Cooked food is actually harder for dogs to digest because cooking breaks down the structure of the proteins and makes them less bioavailable. Raw food, on the other hand, preserves all of the nutrients in its natural state, making them more easily absorbed by your dog's body. This means that when you feed your dog raw food, they're getting more nutrition from their diet than they would from a cooked diet.

Raw Diets Are Better For Your Dog's Teeth

One of the most common arguments against raw diets is that they are bad for your dog's teeth. This simply isn't true. Studies have shown that raw diets actually help keep your dog's teeth clean and healthy. The chewing required to eat a raw diet helps remove plaque and tartar from your dog's teeth, and the high moisture content of raw food helps keep their mouth hydrated and free of bacteria.

Conclusion:

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions out there about raw diets for dogs, but the truth is that raw diets offer several benefits over traditional kibble or canned foods. Raw diets are more nutritious, more digestible, and better for your dog's teeth. If you're looking for a way to improve your dog's health, switching to a raw diet is a great place to start.
